Then what I do is usually load up omnisphere or spire or sylenth or nexus then just preset surf while the loop is playing and try and just find the presets that jump out to me that just work or do something impressive. usually just lowpassed detuned saw waves work. Then find your prominent 'bright' sound, then your low Bandpassed from 200hz-2000khz-ish type sound that sits low in the background. Other voicings that work great are ones that start with a 5th in the lower part then other chord tones up above it playing melodic lines and stuff. Try to avoid a stacked 3rd voicing although sometimes this can work if you just stack two triads on top of each other, then a mid bass an octave below with the lowest notes of the voicing, and a sub bass below that. Experiment with these mixing ideas in hand with EQ and I'm sure you'll find the balance your looking for.įirst it all starts with a great voicing. or have a two side chains with the reverb/haz on a slightly slower time but higher ratio. Sidechain pre/post the reverb / haz effect to taste. A long diffusive Reverb can also help put it into the background of the mix. You can then dry/wet as you please to make the sound seem wider/stretched so that your lead/drums/bass can be in the center of the mix. I do this by increasing the stereo field of the chord instrument to the sides by using the utility audio device or spread function if im using a synth with that option, as well I have a audio effect rack that makes sounds wider its called a Haz Effect you can look it up on youtube, but It a rack with two chains at the same volume hard panned left and right with one chain empty and the other with a simple delay set to link and time set 24.4 ms with 0 feedback. I see chords progs/pads as a backdrop / setting to the music so I push them to the sides and back so the core of the song lead/drums/bass/vocals stay large up front and center. IDK if you use Ableton but ill be using their effects, but I am sure it can be replicated in any DAW.
